Bruce Highway Upgrade, Cooroy to Curra – Koala Offset Planting
Project Description
Due to the Bruce Highway Upgrade, Cooroy to Curra project DTMR had an obligation to undertake a Koala Habitat Offset Planting project to establish a minimum of 113,000 koala habitat trees. AWLQ was awarded the project in late 2015 and implemented the project in collaboration with GHD and DTMR. Of the total 203Ha site area spread across 8 sites, 73Ha was vegetated with low priority vegetation. After surveying the site AWLQ calculated that some terrain was too steep to access and therefore a total of 36Ha would need to be cleared. Once areas were cleared and/or slashed we used 4×4 ATV’s with rear mounted spray units to establish planting rows. Once rows were established we installed high quality tube stock and fertiliser and used our ATV’s to water and establish the plants. We continue to slash in between rows and spray around the trees until they are mature enough to out compete pasture grasses. The project has an ongoing 5 years of maintenance and monitoring period.
